When ordering material for a typical home, we suggest the following approach to organizing your material requirements. It is advisable to progress room by room listing the items in a table such as this one, noting required materials in the presented order.
Clear specifications lead to efficiency during installation by the carpenter. When ordering for door frames, ordering sets of material is an efficient specification of material, reduces waste and saves organization time during installation. If other specified length material is ordered, we will try to complete each order as specified. However, if a piece longer than ordered is the only material available at the time of the order, the longer piece will be supplied and the extra length will be charge. If specified length material is ordered, there may be an extra charge of up to 15% applied to the order, depending upon the type of product ordered and the wood species. This extra reflects the effort in hand-selecting the required length, and the availability of specified length of certain wood species. We will confirm any extra charge for specified lengths at the time of placing your order.

Baseboards
Profile code - Linear footage - Specify if a particular length is required. In most situations, random lengths of baseboard are supplied as it will have to be cut to fit in corners, etc. Approximately 5 to 10% waste should be allowed when ordering.

Door Stop

Profile code - set size required.

Doors

Width and height and thickness. Hardware and door swing should be specified if doors are to be ordered pre-hung. (For example a right hand swing door is a door that has the hinges on its right hand as you walk through the door, with the door opening outwards in front of you.)

Jambs

Width and height and thickness of wall. The nominal wall (stud thickness plus drywall or wall finish) should be increased by approximately 1/16" - 1/8" to ensure a good fit of the casing onto the jamb. A set, consisting of two vertical jamb legs and one header, should be ordered (ea. 3/0 x 6/8 - 4 5/8" set consists of two jamb legs 3/4" x 4 5/8" wide by 6' 10" long, plus a jamb header 3/~" X 4 5/8" x 3' long). The thickness of the jamb, the width and the length can vary according to product specifications and site requirements.

Simple Cross Checks

Count the total number of doors in the home and verify the count with your list.

The number of jamb sets and stop sets should equal the number of doors. Jamb sets may be more due to extra framed openings.

The number of casing sets should be twice the number of jamb sets. Extra casing sets may be ordered for exterior doors.

The linear casing should approximate 20' times the number of windows. If you have larger or smaller windows, the quantity may be larger or smaller accordingly.

The baseboard will be approximately 1/3 of the typical square footage of the home. If the home has a number of smaller or larger rooms this number will vary.

Special Moulding

Profile code - linear footage Specify any requirements for crown moulds, chair rails or other profiles such as panel moulds, etc.. If a particular length is required, be sure to specify it. In most situations, random lengths of moulding are supplied. Approximately 5 to 10% waste should be allowed when ordering.

Window Casing

Profile code - Linear footage - Specify if particular lengths are required. In most situations, random lengths of casing are supplied as windows will vary in size. Allowances should be made for the mitres at the top and bottom of each window. Exterior doors and patio doors / windows should be ordered as sets under (4). Approximately 5 to 10% waste should be allowed when ordering. Specify under special instructions if casing corner blocks or mullion covers (to cover the stapled joint between casement windows) are required, or if window sills and aprons are being used.
